Locomotive Societies

Although many heritage lines have their own fleet of locomotives, many rely to some extent on the hiring of locomotives  owned by dedicated locomotive societies.

If you are a member of a heritage railway (we estimate there are about 100,000 of you) why not consider also supporting a locomotive society, perhaps one which operates on your line.

The Railway Club Directory lists societies and groups based in the UK that own or have long term custody of standard gauge steam and/or diesel locomotives.

Note that heritage railways and centres which own their own locomotives are not included here as they appear in the ‘Heritage Railways’ section of this website.

Locomotive Societies are usually dedicated to either steam locomotives or diesel locomotives, and according we have divided this section into 'Steam Locomotive Societies' and 'Diesel Locomotive societies'.
